Alismatales is an order of monocot flowering plants comprising 13 families, about 165 genera, and roughly 4,500 species, most of them found in tropical and aquatic environments including fresh water, marine habitats, and marshes. The order includes the taro plant, an economically important food crop, and the seagrasses, the only angiosperms that grow fully submerged in the sea. Alismatales are among the earliest-diverging monocots and are unusual among them for retaining green embryos.
