Dentaliida is one of the two orders of scaphopod mollusks, commonly known as elephant's tusk shells, and contains most of the larger bodied scaphopods across eight recognized families. It is distinguished from the other scaphopod order, Gadilida, by a shell that tapers uniformly from the front of the animal to the back, by a boat shaped foot with a central trough, and by differences in the arrangement of internal organs. Members of the order have a long fossil record extending from the Carboniferous period to the present.
