An order of birds including woodpeckers, toucans and barbets, most species with two toes pointing forward and two back (zygodactyl feet), well suited to climbing tree trunks. Woodpeckers within the order carry a shock-absorbing skull structure that allows repeated high-speed pecking without brain injury.
