A phylum of gram-positive bacteria, many of which grow in branching, filamentous colonies superficially resembling fungi. Actinobacteria includes Streptomyces, the source of the majority of naturally derived antibiotics in clinical use, as well as the pathogens that cause tuberculosis and leprosy.
