A phylum of gram-negative bacteria found abundantly in soil, sediment, seawater and the guts of animals, where they specialize in breaking down complex organic molecules such as plant cellulose. Bacteroidetes species make up a substantial fraction of the normal bacterial community in the human digestive tract.
