A phylum of mostly gram-positive bacteria, many capable of forming highly resistant dormant endospores that can survive heat, radiation and years without nutrients. Firmicutes includes Bacillus, Clostridium, and Staphylococcus, along with many of the lactic-acid bacteria used in fermenting food.
