Ochrophyta is a phylum of photosynthetic protists within the stramenopile lineage, unified by chloroplasts that arose through a secondary endosymbiotic event. The phylum includes the brown algae, among them giant kelp, as well as the diatoms, microscopic single-celled algae that are major primary producers in aquatic ecosystems.
