A large and metabolically diverse phylum of gram-negative bacteria named for the Greek god Proteus for the sheer variety of forms within it. Proteobacteria includes Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and the nitrogen-fixing Rhizobium that partners symbiotically with legume plant roots.
