The fungal kingdom: eukaryotic organisms, mostly multicellular, that digest organic matter externally and absorb the nutrients, with cell walls built from chitin rather than cellulose. Fungi are genetically closer to animals than to plants, and include mushroom-forming species, molds, yeasts and the vast unseen networks of mycelium that recycle dead organic material in nearly every terrestrial ecosystem.
