The Old World flycatchers, family Muscicapidae, are a large family of birds restricted to Europe, Africa and Asia, with two species also reaching North America. The family comprises 357 species in 57 genera, mainly small arboreal insectivores that often take their prey on the wing. Members range from 9 to 22 centimeters long, typically with broad, flattened bills adapted for catching insects in flight, and inhabit everything from dense forest to open scrub and montane woodland. Many northern species migrate south for the winter to maintain an insect diet.
