Theraphosidae is the spider family that holds the tarantulas, large and often hairy spiders placed in the infraorder Mygalomorphae within the order Araneae. More than a thousand species are described, grouped in almost two hundred genera. Many New World members carry urticating hairs, fine barbed setae that can irritate the skin and, in extreme cases, damage the eyes. Several species are popular in the exotic pet trade, and the common name tarantula is also stretched to cover other mygalomorph spiders that are not true members of the family.
