Silver-haired bat

The silver-haired bat, scientific name Lasionycteris noctivagans, is the only member of its genus and belongs to the vesper bat family Vespertilionidae; its species name means night-wandering, reflecting its nocturnal habits. It is a medium-sized bat with predominantly black wings, ears, tail membrane and fur, marked by white-tipped hairs and a densely furred basal half of the tail membrane that give it a frosted appearance and its common name. It has a flattened skull with a broad rostrum, weighs 8 to 12 grams, measures about 100 millimeters in total length with a 40-millimeter tail, and has a forearm 37 to 44 millimeters long. The species migrates seasonally across Bermuda, Canada, Mexico and the United States, traveling from southeastern Alaska in summer to northeastern Mexico in winter.
