Dinoflagellates are mostly marine plankton, though they are also common in freshwater habitats, and their populations vary with sea surface temperature, salinity and depth. Many are photosynthetic, and a large fraction of these are mixotrophic, combining photosynthesis with the ingestion of prey.FactsDinophyceaeConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsClassificationLiving or ExtinctWell-attestedYes 1Taxonomic RankWell-attestedClass 2DinophyceaeFilter Results8 entriesCommon GroupAllRed Tide and Toxin-Producing Dinoflagellates (6)HabitatAllCoral Reef (1)Estuary (1)Freshwater (1)Marine (2)Conservation StatusAllNot Evaluated (5)EcosystemAllCoral Reef Systems (1)Everyday GroupAllRed Tide and Toxin-Producing Dinoflagellates (6)DietAllMixotroph (1)Photosynthetic Autotroph (4)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (2)Marine (7)Relationship to PeopleAllVenomous or Dangerous to Humans (1)Living or ExtinctAllYes (3)Where It LivesAllAustralia (1)Brazil (2)China (1)Denmark (1)France (1)Indonesia (1)Mexico (3)Netherlands (1)Norway (2)Oman (2)Somalia (1)Sweden (3)Taiwan (1)The Persian Gulf (1)Ukraine (1)United Kingdom (1)United States (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 8Alexandrium CatenellaDinophyceaeCeratiumDinophyceaeGambierdiscus ToxicusDinophyceaeGonyaulaxDinophyceaeKarenia BrevisDinophyceaeNoctilucaDinophyceaePfiesteria PiscicidaDinophyceaeSymbiodiniumDinophyceaeConnectionsParent Taxon OfAlexandrium Catenella, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Alexandrium CatenellaCeratium, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: CeratiumGambierdiscus Toxicus, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Gambierdiscus ToxicusGonyaulax, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: GonyaulaxKarenia Brevis, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Karenia BrevisNoctiluca, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: Noctiluca scintillansPfiesteria Piscicida, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Pfiesteria PiscicidaSymbiodinium, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: SymbiodiniumSources1.
