Scorpaeniformes, also called Scleroparei, is a large traditional order of ray finned fish that once grouped more than 1320 species including the stonefish, lionfish and sculpins. Current ichthyological classification treats Scorpaeniformes as an obsolete grouping, redistributing its former members among other orders, though the name remains in wide use for this assemblage of spiny, often venomous fish.
