Uroplatus

Uroplatus is a genus of geckos, family Gekkonidae, known as leaf-tailed geckos, comprising 22 recognized species endemic to Madagascar and its coastal islands such as Nosy Be. These nocturnal, arboreal geckos range roughly 10 to 30 centimeters in total length and show highly cryptic coloration, mostly grayish brown to black or greenish brown with markings resembling tree bark, aided by dermal flaps along the body that scatter shadows and conceal their outline; some species mimic twigs and leaves while others resemble bark. The genus is insectivorous and holds the largest number of marginal teeth among all living amniotes, along with a distinctive laryngotracheal complex, and represents a case of convergent evolution with the superficially similar Australian leaf-tail geckos of unrelated genera.
