Freshwater and Wetland Biomes

The biome of lakes, rivers, streams and freshwater wetlands, set apart from the Marine biome by very low salt content and, unlike the ocean, by a tight two-way link to the surrounding land: a river or lake's chemistry, temperature and flow are shaped directly by the watershed draining into it. Ecologists commonly split it into lotic systems, flowing water such as rivers and streams, and lentic systems, standing water such as lakes and ponds, alongside freshwater wetlands, marshes and swamps that sit at the boundary with dry land and flood only seasonally or permanently at shallow depth. Freshwater habitats cover under one percent of the Earth's surface, yet hold a disproportionate share of the planet's species: a large fraction of all known fish species and much of its amphibian diversity live nowhere else, concentrated into a tiny share of available habitat. Because freshwater bodies exist on every continent and across every climate, from tropical floodplain to Arctic lake, this biome carries no single characteristic temperature or rainfall range the way a climate-defined biome does; its unifying trait is fresh water itself.

Facts
Climate
Typical Low Temperature (C)
1.7 1
Converted from 35 degrees Fahrenheit, the source's own reported winter average low (35 to 45 F range stated; low end used).
Typical High Temperature (C)
23.9 1
Converted from 75 degrees Fahrenheit, the source's own reported summer average high (65 to 75 F range stated; high end used).
Disputed
Annual Precipitation (mm)
1143 2
1143mm is the midpoint of the cited source's stated 10 to 80 inch (254mm to 2032mm) annual range. Freshwater habitats exist on every continent and in every climate, so no single figure is fully meaningful, matching this entity's own description that the biome carries no single characteristic rainfall total.

  • britannica.com/science/inland-water-ecosystem, third paragraph on inland water percentage
Only a relatively small fraction of the total amount of water in the biosphere is found as free water on continental landmasses. The oceans contain about 97.6 percent of the biosphere’s water, and polar ice, groundwater, and water vapour take up another 2.4 percent. Thus, less than 1 percent exists as continental free water, which is generally referred to as inland water. In spite of this small percentage, inland water is an essential element of the biosphere. It occurs in a wide variety of forms and is inhabited by a diverse set of biological communities, quite distinct from the communities of marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
