Home›Species›Taxonomy›AmphiprionTaxaAmphiprionFish GeneraReference and ClassificationVerifiedAmphiprion is a genus of small, brightly patterned reef fish commonly called clownfish or anemonefish, native to the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific. Species typically display bold white bars across a red, orange, yellow, brown, or black body, and are best known for their mutualistic relationship with sea anemones, whose stinging tentacles they are specially adapted to resist. In exchange for the anemone's shelter and protection from predators, the fish clean the host, drive off anemone-eating fish, and supply nutrients through their waste. Clownfish live in small anemone-based social groups with a strict size-based dominance hierarchy topped by a single breeding female; when she is lost, the dominant male changes sex to replace her. Popularised by the film Finding Nemo, the ocellaris clownfish is among the most heavily traded marine aquarium species, and wild collection pressure has contributed to local population declines.FactsAmphiprionConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsClassificationLiving or ExtinctWell-attestedYes 1Taxonomic RankWell-attestedGenus 1AmphiprionFilter Results27 entriesCommon GroupAllCichlids, Anemonefish And Damselfish (27)HabitatAllCoral Reef (16)Marine (16)Conservation StatusAllLeast Concern (20)EcosystemAllChagos Archipelago (1)Coral Reef Systems (17)Coral Sea (1)Coral Triangle (2)Great Barrier Reef (6)Ningaloo Reef (1)Everyday GroupAllCichlids, Anemonefish And Damselfish (27)DietAllCarnivore (4)Herbivore (1)Omnivore (18)System (Realm)AllMarine (27)Relationship to PeopleAllHunted or Fished (13)Kept as Pets (21)Living or ExtinctAllYes (27)Where It LivesAllAustralia (1)Australia (1)China (5)Comoros (1)Djibouti (1)Eritrea (1)Indonesia (2)Japan (3)Kenya (4)Madagascar (2)Malay Archipelago (1)Marshall Islands (2)Mauritius (2)Melanesia (2)Mozambique (5)Philippines (1)Seychelles (2)South Africa (2)Tanzania (3)The Pacific Ocean (1)Tonga (1)Vanuatu (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 27Allard's ClownfishAmphiprionAustralian ClownfishAmphiprionBarber's ClownfishAmphiprionBarrier Reef AnemonefishAmphiprionChagos AnemonefishAmphiprionCinnamon ClownfishAmphiprionClark's AnemonefishAmphiprionMadagascar AnemonefishAmphiprionMaldive AnemonefishAmphiprionMauritian AnemonefishAmphiprionMcCulloch's AnemonefishAmphiprionNosestripe ClownfishAmphiprionOcellaris ClownfishAmphiprionOman AnemonefishAmphiprionOrange ClownfishAmphiprionOrange Skunk ClownfishAmphiprionOrange-fin AnemonefishAmphiprionPacific AnemonefishAmphiprionPink Skunk ClownfishAmphiprionRed Saddleback AnemonefishAmphiprionRed Sea ClownfishAmphiprionSaddleback ClownfishAmphiprionSebae ClownfishAmphiprionSeychelles AnemonefishAmphiprionThree-band AnemonefishAmphiprionTomato ClownfishAmphiprionWide-band AnemonefishAmphiprionConnectionsParent Taxon OfAllard's Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source Allard's Clownfish (Wikidata)tier 2Australian Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source Australian Clownfish (Wikidata)tier 2Barber's Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: Amphiprion barberiBarrier Reef Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source Barrier Reef Anemonefish (Wikidata)tier 2Chagos Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Chagos AnemonefishCinnamon Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source Cinnamon Clownfish (Wikidata)tier 2Clark's Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source Clark's Anemonefish (Wikidata)tier 2Madagascar Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: Amphiprion latifasciatusMaldive Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source Amphiprion nigripes (Wikidata)tier 2Mauritian Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source Amphiprion chrysogaster (Wikidata)tier 2McCulloch's Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: Amphiprion mccullochiNosestripe Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source Amphiprion akallopisos (Wikidata)tier 2Ocellaris Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source Wikidata: Ocellaris ClownfishOman Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: Amphiprion omanensisOrange Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source Orange Clownfish (Wikidata)tier 2Orange Skunk Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source Orange Skunk Clownfish (Wikidata)tier 2Orange-fin Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source Orange-fin Anemonefish (Wikidata)tier 2Pacific Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: Amphiprion pacificusPink Skunk Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source Pink Skunk Clownfish (Wikidata)tier 2Red Saddleback Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source Red Saddleback Anemonefish (Wikidata)tier 2Red Sea Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source Red Sea Clownfish (Wikidata)tier 2Saddleback Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source Saddleback Clownfish (Wikidata)tier 2Sebae Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source Sebae Clownfish (Wikidata)tier 2Seychelles Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: Amphiprion fuscocaudatusThree-band Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source Three-band Anemonefish (Wikidata)tier 2Tomato Clownfish, Species Well-attested Source Tomato Clownfish (Wikidata)tier 2Wide-band Anemonefish, Species Well-attested Source GBIF Backbone Taxonomy: Amphiprion latezonatusSources1.
