Amphiprion

Amphiprion is a genus of small, brightly patterned reef fish commonly called clownfish or anemonefish, native to the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific. Species typically display bold white bars across a red, orange, yellow, brown, or black body, and are best known for their mutualistic relationship with sea anemones, whose stinging tentacles they are specially adapted to resist. In exchange for the anemone's shelter and protection from predators, the fish clean the host, drive off anemone-eating fish, and supply nutrients through their waste. Clownfish live in small anemone-based social groups with a strict size-based dominance hierarchy topped by a single breeding female; when she is lost, the dominant male changes sex to replace her. Popularised by the film Finding Nemo, the ocellaris clownfish is among the most heavily traded marine aquarium species, and wild collection pressure has contributed to local population declines.
